Wirey Swamp Stage Two Land Purchase
Stage Two of the Wirey Swamp Restoration Reserve is situated just a few hundred metres south of Stage One, separated by an area of pine plantation. Stage One was successfully purchased by NGT in mid-2025, thanks to the incredible support of a wide range of partners and supporters.
The Reserve is situated in the Strathdownie district of western Victoria, about a 25 minute drive west of Casterton. This is near one of the region’s most important brolga flocking sites at Kaladbro, a key zone for the species that straddles the state border between Victoria and South Australia.
As soon as we clear the land purchase debt on Stage Two, this second property can become part of NGT’s newest Permanent Reserve alongside Stage One and double its size to around 350 acres in total area. As a Permanent Reserve, Stage Two would be restored, protected and held by NGT in perpetuity, with the support of the NGT Foundation.
In some fantastic early news to kick things off in January 2026, we received an incredibly generous $200,000 contribution that allowed us to match pubic donations. These funds were fully allocated by mid-May 2026.
Then in late May 2026, a new partnership commenced with two local plantation forestry companies, New Forests and Timberlands Pacific, resulting in a further $200,000 being committed to continue to match any further public donations. This is the final matching amount now required to meet our full target.
These funds will be released to match public donations – as they arrive – dollar for dollar, doubling your impact and accelerating the rate at which the land purchase cost is covered.
