New or experienced bird watchers: You’re invited to join the Limestone Coast Woodland Bird surveys

We’re inviting participants to be part of a new region-wide woodland bird survey across the Limestone Coast. By partnering experienced birdwatchers with newcomers, it’s a fantastic opportunity to get into bird-watching, practise your skills, or meet new people, plus there’s no expectation of ongoing commitment.

This project is being coordinated by Nature Glenelg Trust (NGT), with support from the SA Government Citizen Science Fund and the Limestone Coast Landscape Board. The long-term aim is to build this into an annual survey that contributes valuable regional bird data, similar to long-running programs in the Adelaide Hills and the Bangham district.

Surveys will mostly take place in National Parks and ForestrySA native forests, with a small number of sites on private land. We’ll be using the BirdLife Australia Atlas method—standard 2-hectare, 20-minute surveys at set locations.

Experienced birders – How you can help
We’re inviting experienced birders to support newcomers—primarily participants from Greg Kerr’s bird ID courses—by joining them for just one survey session during the survey period (11–26 April 2026). There’s no expectation of ongoing commitment beyond this. Even taking someone out once is a valuable way to build skills and confidence, and to help grow our local birding community.

If you’re available, we’ll match you with a participant (or small group) and arrange a time that suits you. We’ll provide AVENZA maps, Birdata logins (if needed), and support with apps or methods if helpful. We’d love to have you involved in whatever capacity you can manage.
