NGT Out and about — Photos from the field in September

Bryan has shared some field photos from two South Australian NGT reserves: Mt Burr Swamp and Eaglehawk Waterhole.

At Mt Burr Swamp Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation staff have been undertaking some burning training in our Blue gum block earlier in September. Rosemary and Bryan also recently found and flagged-off some rare orchids growing in the Mt Burr Swamp pine plantation, to protect them in the lead up to a clearfall operation starting soon. They are Green Bird orchids which are listed as ‘Endangered’ in South Australia. They also found a long-necked turtle seen wandering between wetlands at Mt Burr Swamp. This species is a new focus for the Limestone Coast region, and NGT is running a workshop on Oct 7th about them as part of the Nature Festival events – click here for details.
At Eaglehawk Waterhole Acacia enterocarpa (or Jumping Jack Wattle) is flowering and looking fabulous. And, a small family of emus are a regular sight for our caretaker Andy.

Plus – a few other snaps from around the regions: Jimmy captured this school of Olive Perchlet swimming through aquatic vegetation in a surrogate breeding pond in Mildura, Grant High School students have learned some skills and given Ange a hand in the NGT Nursery, and Ben has snapped a pretty amazing snow-covered landscape in Tasmania whilst doing fieldwork on a Tasmanian Landscape Conservancy property in the central highlands.
