Orange-bellied Parrots are back on the mainland for winter – can you help us find them?

It’s that time of year again when the Orange-bellied Parrot (OBP) can be found on the Australian mainland. After flying across from their summer breeding grounds in Tasmania, this critically endangered bird is found between Gippsland in Victoria, and the Murray Mouth in South Australia during the winter months, with NGT’s ongoing focus being on south-western Victoria.

The first survey weekend for the mainland season was held over the May 16 and 17 weekend. While we’re still waiting for official numbers to come back, we do know that the birds are moving through the region to get to SA, but we haven’t been able to track them down yet.

The next survey weekends are:

July 25 & 26

September 12 & 13

But surveys can be undertaken at any time.
