Remembering a wonderful NGT volunteer with the creation of the Mārtiņš Reinfelds Memorial Fund in the NGT Foundation

Back in November 2021, after we sadly learned of the death of Mārtiņš Reinsfelds, Bryan Haywood wrote this article reflecting on Mārtiņš’ contribution to NGT’s work as a volunteer, and we also invited people who knew Mārtiņš to make a donation to support a future conservation initiative in his memory.

As a result of those contributions over the past five years, we’re proud to announce that we are recognising Mārtiņš’ deep care for the Australian environment and passion for First Nations culture through the creation of the Mārtiņš Reinfelds Memorial Fund in the NGT Foundation.

Alongside the other Named Funds that make up the NGT Foundation, Mārtiņš’ fund will one day also contribute to the generation of an ongoing annual endowment in support of NGT and the care, maintenance, management and monitoring of, and First Nations involvement with, our permanent reserves. In this way, those wonderful supporters who have contributed to Mārtiņš’ fund, will see your donation in his memory have a perpetual impact, supporting NGT’s work in the special places he cared so much about.

Finally, to give you a bit of a sense who Martins was, and why he had such an affinity with Australian environment and First Nations culture, there was a beautiful story written about Mārtiņš and his travels back in 2010 for Latvietis (an Australian Latvian language newspaper), which gives us some wonderful insights into his life and the things that were important to him. An English version of the article can be downloaded here, or read in the pdf viewer below.
