Students visit Walker Swamp for planting and research

Recently the Hamilton Parklands School senior students came to Walker Swamp, NGT’s reserve in the Southern Grampians, to help replant after the bushfire. As you may recall, this reserve was impacted by a large bushfire in early 2025.

The students planted trees grown by the Friends of the Forgotten Woodlands group. Bill Weatherly, who actually collected the seed and grew the plants, brought the trees out and helped the students plant. We planted banksias, bursarias and sheoaks.  It was a great day, and we could hear the brolgas calling out on Brady’s Swamp, in the distance.

We also had another group of students come to Walker Swamp. Deakin University 3rd year students visited both Walkers Swamp and neighbouring Gooseneck Swamp this month, collecting water samples and conducting health assessments as part of their Catchment to Coast unit.

It’s great to see our reserves used to educate the next generation of Environmental Scientists.
