Since securing the property in 2018, thanks to a unique partnership with the Glenelg Hopkins CMA and the Hamilton Field Naturalists Club – along with fantastic community support, Nature Glenelg Trust has been working hard to get the process of floodplain and wetland restoration works underway.
About the property
The combined Stage 1 and 2 NGT property at Walker Swamp is over 1000 acres (>400 hectares) in size, enabling the full restoration of the Walker Swamp floodplain and physically linking the entire project area with the Wannon River and the Grampians National Park.
Thanks to on-ground works grants from the Victorian Government, Glenelg Hopkins CMA and Australian Government, active restoration works are now underway and the transformational process of ecological recovery is set to begin from winter 2019.
However, despite the success of our major fundraiser in 2018 (which resulted in 2/3 of the $150,000 target being reached) and the great works that are happening on the ground, we are still carrying the shortfall on land purchase costs as an unfunded liability.
With your help, we can clear the debt, and get on with the job of restoring more wetlands across south-eastern Australia.
Thanks for your support!
2018 Campaign Video
To give you a taste of what the project is all about – please have a look at our campaign video (with special thanks to Ockert Le Rous, Alan Richardson, Bryan Haywood and Lachlan Farrington for donating their time, imagery and ideas to the creative process that led to this ‘in-house’ production)…
Outcomes
The Walker Swamp Restoration Reserve provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate sustainable water management, threatened species recovery and large-scale habitat regeneration.
The project will result in the restoration of habitat for a wide range of threatened species such as: the Wimmera Bottlebrush, Little Galaxias, Growling Grass Frog, Western Swamp Crayfish and Australasian Bittern, as well as a range of other important or iconic species, such as the Brolga and the White-bellied Sea Eagle.
Carefully planned restoration works will return natural inundation patterns across the site for the first time in several decades, which in turn will bring back and sustain the missing wildlife of Walker Swamp.
Get on board
Project supporters will be kept up-to-date on the progress of the restoration story over the years ahead, and informed about the different ways to get involved with NGT’s restoration projects. You will also be welcome to visit Walker Swamp and experience exactly what a large area of re-envigorated wetlands looks like – up close.
Our Target
We are trying to close the gap on our land purchase funding shortfall of $150,000.
If you choose to donate
You have our commitment that all donated money will contribute directly towards covering the land purchase costs and the future management of the site.
