Join us at Walkers: Regular volunteer opportunities in the Southern Grampians
Last year we had some fantastic fieldwork days at Walker Swamp, where a crew of amazing volunteers helped to plant seedlings, install wildlife cameras, build a kangaroo-proof fence to protect new plants and much more. This year the Walker Swamp Fieldwork Fridays are back – on the last Friday of every month.
Walker Swamp Restoration Reserve is located in the Southern Grampians region, adjacent to the Grampians National Park. It’s a 20 minute drive from Dunkeld, or 45 minutes from Hamilton, Victoria. Despite it’s beauty, prior to 2018, the site had a history of drainage for agriculture and plantation forestry. Walker Swamp has come a long way since 2018, when a partnership between Nature Glenelg Trust (NGT), Glenelg Hopkins CMA and the Hamilton Field Naturalists Club (HFNC), allowed us to create this wonderful restoration reserve. We’ve still got a lot of work to do, but we are seeing an amazing recovery, including breeding brolgas!
The activities we plan to do during these days include: fencing, planting, weeding, shed construction and clearing fence lines. The weather and time of year will determine what specific tasks we do each month, and we’ll let you know ahead of schedule. We are extremely grateful for the work of our dedicated volunteers. It’s a great opportunity to get out and meet new people, see this amazing site, and contribute to local restoration work. We’d love to have you along! See below for the 2023 Walker Swamp dates.

Lisa McIntyre and I will also keep you in touch with other activities that just ‘come up’, such as the red gum assessments, flora & fauna surveys, additional weed work, planting, etc. that may happen on days other than Fieldwork Fridays.
