Wetland restoration in action – new sites will add 50 hectares of restored wetlands

It has been a very cool and dry start to winter in southwestern Victoria with rainfall in the region falling well below average. This is a bit of a change from the last few years that had above-average rainfall that filled wetlands across the landscape.

However, these drier conditions haven’t stopped progress for the Wetland Restoration Program, which has been running for just over a year.

In the past month, we have collaborated with landholders to restore natural hydrology to their wetlands. These two sites will add nearly 50 hectares of restored wetlands to our region. As you can see from the photos, there is not a lot happening in the wetlands right now. Previously, they were poor-performing pasture paddocks that were often waterlogged in winter and could only be grazed in summer months. But in a few short years, we expect to see wetland vegetation bounce back and waterbirds begin to use the wetland habitat again.

NGT learned about these wetlands from the landholders who had recognised an opportunity for restoration and biodiversity conservation on their land. If you are a landholder with a drained or modified wetland in need of some care and attention, and you’re interested in learning more about wetland restoration on private land in Western Victoria, then please get in touch: or 0429 021 500.

The Wetland Restoration Program on private land is an initiative of Nature Glenelg Trust.
