Our focus at Walker Swamp, over the past five years since it joined our network of Restoration Reserves, has been on improving water management of this magnificent floodplain wetland complex and setting it on a new trajectory of ecological recovery.
With that process successfully underway, we were fortunate in late April 2023 to secure, under contract, the opportunity to expand the existing 1100 acre reserve by a further 390 acres of land, adding a new, threatened woodland protection and restoration component to the project. This key zone is situated at the northern end of Walker Swamp, as shown below.
With settlement set for the 30th June 2023, over a period of 2 months more than 200 donors helped us reach our $500,000 target, a few days ahead of settlement.
The support of major donors and the Purryburry Trust enabled public donations to be matched, dollar for dollar, and helped us more rapidly reach the target. The final funding gap ahead of settlement was generously filled by the Drakensberg Trust.
