Limestone Coast Bird ID course coming your way

Have you ever wished to know more about native Australian birds? Or wondered which bird was making that call from out of sight? Well, we have the course for you!

Nature Glenelg Trust is teaming up with the Limestone Coast Landscape Board to run a series of comprehensive 10-session bird identification courses. The courses will run in the Limestone Coast NRM region over the next two years, and are supported by a grant from the South Australian Government’s Citizen Science Fund. Each course will be run over a ten-week period led by Dr Greg Kerr, who has delivered many similar courses in South Australia and western Victoria. The courses are free to the public and are a must for anyone starting out in bird watching or ornithology. The courses are designed to build the skills and confidence of novice twitchers but may be of interest to more experienced bird watchers who want to extend their knowledge and skills.

Each 4-hour session will combine a field component and indoor workshop session. You will get first-hand field experience in bird identification in a variety of habitat types and will learn to identify around 300 bird species by sight, calls, behaviour and habitat use. The course also covers avian classification, anatomy, ecology, and behaviour. By the end of the ten-week course you will be confidently conducting two hectare/20 minute surveys and submitting your results through a phone app called Birdata. If this sounds like something of interest to you, we urge you to book now as only 20 places are available for each course. You must be able to commit to attending all ten sessions. The first course starts on October 1st in Mt Gambier and we hope to bring additional courses to other parts of the region in 2025.

Be quick, there are only 20 spots available in Mount Gambier and they are sure to fly out the door!
