New funding announced to support critical works at Mount Burr Swamp
Late last month, the State and Federal Governments publicly announced a wide range of projects that are now underway as a result of the Shorebird and Wetland Habitat program. Included on the list of 25 projects, you will see that this program will now invest in further critical works being completed at the Mt Burr Swamp Restoration Reserve, as a result of NGT being awarded a $150,000 grant.
Our project is site #18 marked on the map below, which shows the geographic spread of projects that will benefit a wide range of wetlands across the Murray Mouth, Lower Lakes, Coorong and South East coastal zones of SA.
As you can see, there are a number of notable wetlands that are set to benefit, but one that deserves a special mention is the State Government’s acquisition of Mundoo Island Station – a tremendous outcome for this important area consisting of multiple islands and wetlands at the junction where the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth meet. It will be fascinating to see this restoration project unfold over the years ahead.
Back to NGT’s project, and to learn more about the important permanent flow regulating structure and feral fish barrier that we are constructing at the outlet from the Stage 2 wetland restoration area at Mt Burr Swamp via this grant, please take a listen to the following interview on ABC South East SA. This story gives a nice overview of what the project is all about (just hit the play symbol below to listen):
You can also read the digital Border Watch article that was published earlier this month, by clicking through the pages in the pdf viewer below (you can also download this here).
Finally, remember to keep following future editions of the NGT newsletter, as we’ll have more updates on this project once the work gets underway!
The project at Mt Burr Swamp is being delivered by Nature Glenelg Trust, via by the Shorebird and Wetland Habitat program,
which is funded by the Australian Government and administered by the South Australian Government.
