NGT Out and about — Photos from the field in July

We held our first volunteer fence removal day this month at Walker Swamp, NGT’s recently expanded restoration reserve near the Grampians National Park. 

Lisa reports from the working bees: “We started removing the eastern fence between the swamp and the new block (we removed about 850 metres). Even though the fence isn’t very old, the bush had certainly grown thick and healthily through it, so we were very glad to have the tractor to help us! Don & Jacinta helped NGT’s Lisa, Rosemary & Andy over two days. Two brolgas flew low overhead at the same time each day, and landed on the other side of the swamp, which is currently very dry. What a wonderful and encouraging sign. It happened just before the latest rain – so perhaps they knew something we didn’t. Looking back on where we worked – pulling the fence down & rolling it up was just as satisfying as it is when you look back on a new fence you’ve just put up!”

Bryan and the team started revegetation activities last week at Mt Burr Swamp, planting Baloskion (a very pretty native sedge). It started raining shortly after they got started, so they all got very wet!

Volunteers then joined in the action on Friday. It was a productive morning in the drizzle, before the weather turned and the rain became a bit too heavy at lunchtime, but we managed to get 207 plants in the ground. A highlight was a lovely hot lunch in the shearing shed with views overlooking the main swamp – just take a look at that view below!
