Portland Native Plant Display Garden – one year later…

One year after the initial site planting, dedicated Portland Community Garden members attended an activity day last Saturday, 18 July. Jobs on the day included planting an additional 450 plants, weeding the beds, and removing guards from established plants.

Volunteers hard at work weeding

That garden has seen a phenomenal survival rate, with trees and shrubs now well above one metre in height, groundcovers spreading, and herbaceous plants self-seeding and sending out runners to create new plants.

The Community Garden’s resident koala watched over proceedings

The Community Garden group holds monthly activity days, and maintenance of the native garden will be a regular task at future events in order to keep the garden in great condition.

Hundreds of guards were removed as last years plants are now well-established
