Up Close events for March 2014 – botanical illustration and butterflies
There are some exciting “Up Close” events coming up in March!
The 2014 program kicks off on Wednesday March 12 with the first session of a 4 week botanical illustration course with local artist and botanist Yvonne Riley. Hosted at the NGT Community Nursery in Vansittart Park, these pencil-based sessions will look at how to approach the art and science of botanical illustration, including what makes an illustration scientifically accurate, how to choose a specimen, and drawing and colouring techniques. Using high quality materials, the aim is to get something worthy of hanging on your wall by the final week!
Places are extremely limited, so it’s very important to register quickly if you’re keen to come along. $20 will cover your materials and tuition for the whole 4 weeks. See the flyer for the details (or click here for a pdf) and contact Jonathan Tuck to register (details below).
On Sunday March 24, local butterfly expert Bryan Haywood from Forestry SA will be in Dartmoor to guide a group through the identification of the butterflies of South East SA and South West Victoria. Bryan will bring his own collection of specimens and will give an introduction to the Silver Xenica, along with an invitation to get involved with a citizen science program that aims to rediscover Silver Xenica populations. We’ll have a search to see what we can find and will finish up the day with a free lunch. Sounds like a good day out! Register for the butterfly event to Jonathan Tuck (details below).
In April, watch for some hands-on marine events with Alex Gaut from Conservation Council SA, and a seabirds night at Warnambool.
