Walker Swamp Restoration Reserve impacted by the Grampians bushfire
Strong northerly and then north-westerly winds on Boxing Day pushed the southern extent of the Grampians fire towards NGT’s Reserve at Walker Swamp, where – at the time of writing (27th Dec) – we understand that the southern portion of the property has been impacted. As you’ll see on the map below, apparently the fire front was contained before reaching NGT’s Green Swamp Restoration Reserve, a short distance away to the south-east.
Now that the change has gone through, the weather is much milder and is predicted to remain this way for several days, so we are hopeful that this part of (what is now) a very extensive fire front will be brought fully under control – thanks to the tireless efforts of the firefighters working in the area. When it is safe to do so, we’ll be undertaking an assessment of the property to determine the extent of any environmental and infrastructure impacts, and will provide an update in the January NGT newsletter – as we know how many NGT supporters have a close connection with this important restoration site.
